Good Luck
in your fight. And make no mistake, it IS a FIGHT.0 -
Thanks Tony...If there is one thing Sweeney's enjoy more than
good company, food, and beer, and it a good fight!!!!! My mother and father raised us up to be ladies and gentlemen first, and when that fails you gotta fight....but most importantly .....you must fight to win!!!!! Quick story: When my older brother Bart was growing up in Howard Beach (yes that howard Beach...home of The Dapper Don John Gotti, and the place where most of Goodfellas real life characters lived and killed)a rough and ready suburb of NYC, he was getting roughed up everyday at school, by 3-4 future mobsters. For you see, he was the new kid in 3rd grade, and, he was Irish - a scant minority in that town. They taunted him all day long, and would jump him after school. After the 3rd day of coming home with his Catholic school unform ripped and full of blood, mom had had it. "ok, Bart, today after school, I will be waiting where they jump you everyday and you will get your revenge." 3 o'clock came and mom was waiting: "ok! you think you guys are tough because you all jump on him at once? Bart will fight ALL of you, BUT one at a time!!!" The big, fat one Anthony came first, Bart got him to the ground and pounded on him till he gave up....next...by the time the 3rd kid was soundly defeated, the 4th bully took off running - good thing because bart was exhausted and could barely raise his arms. Mom picked up Bart and helped him home. My father was thrilled with the victory - naturally. That afternoon was the beginning of my brother's fighting and winning legacy. They really never messed with him again, but once in awhile when they did he always won. Sorry for the trip down memory lane, but I had too.....alot of other mothers would have said run fast or go up to the school to complain....my mom....she taught us self respect by being tough when you need to be...the bullies learned and so did we. Howard Beach?
Dear Matt:
Your Mom, you and your family will be in my thoughts. I've read your posts here about you mother and she seems to have a wonderful spirit. I KNOW you have and you must have learned it somewhere. I wish her good health and continued love.
I grew up in Ozone Park. Did you or your brother go to Goddard Junior High School? Around 1969? John Adams High School? Around 1971? Or did you stay in Catholic School?

Hey Arlene you know the old neighborhood huh?
My father graduated Adams in 1959. We pop grew up over a bar called the Rainbow near Rockaway and 116th street. He and his father were horsemen with Aqueduct Belmont and Saratoga. We started out at O.L.P.H. grammar school, all went to St Helen's in HB and then to my brother and sister went to Saint Francis Prep. I went to public h.s. when we moved to Floral Park. My brother and I recently returned to OZ to coach my nephew in Lynvets Football (One of the oldest Pop Warner football leagues in the Nation). They still play right by Goddard on Crossbay Field and Pals oval./ We have fun in the old neighborhood. We bring mom down and always go to New Park Pizza - the best in the world!!!! small world huh? Matt, my father was a trainer
Gilbert Puentes. Belmont, Aqueduct, Saratoga.
He was really good. He had a Claimer who came in second at the 1984 Jockey's Cup race. My dad was a great trainer and he LOVED his profession. He died in 1985 at the height of his career. It's too bad (for a lot of reasons, of course) but if he had had a few more years he'd have made the Hall of Fame.
You know Matt, we've probably passed each other on the street more than once.
