Jamie's cottage

I went to visit Jamie Hall in Connecticut this weekend, to look at his vapor system in his “cottage”. The cottage is split into halves, heating wise. One half is valved off and not used. It is all still there, but unused. The system is a Hoffman with a Hoffman Loop on it, still.

Comments

  • the boiler

The boiler has been changed, and the new one was just stuck in, but it works. The boiler is sized to just do half of the house. The pressure is controlled by the vaporstat, so the Hoffman Differential loop just sits there doing nothing.
  • Hoffman Differential #0

Jamie won’t part with it, though. I can understand that. I’m trying to find out what the height of the waterline is supposed to be with this old system. It can stay if it is understood and not messed with (waterline-wise).
  • header

Looking at the “Header”, an old Smith used to be there. Jamie has a plan to get the whole system back to working condition. He needs to chew up some floor to replace some returns, cut in a couple valves, and install a new boiler (and maybe some more work).
  • hot air

This house has been in the family for well over 100 years. 80 some odd years ago, someone sold to them the idea of wet heat, this vapor system. I’m not sure they were completely convinced, because there STILL is a working gravity warm air by coal furnace in the next room. There is still coal in the bin. I couldn’t believe my eyes! A one hundred plus year old furnace sitting there, waiting to be lit. It’s not going to be lit, though, because WET HEAT RULES!!!!!
  • the rest of the house

I wish I lived closer. This project is do-able. It could be fun, too. Jamie, I hope someone links up with you to do this project. Let me know how I can help.
