Expansion Tank Vent

I found out several years ago at a seminar run by some guy named Dan Hulahoop* that when you check the pressure on an expansion tank with an air bladder there should be no pressure on the tank on the water side while your'e checking. I started isolating the tank with a ball valve with a waste vent on the tank side so I can shut off the tank, bleed the water pressure and check the air in very short order. Is this a common practice? Makes sense to me. *(Is it appropriate to poke fun at our benevolent hosts name?)I just got my digital camera working again. I'll try to send a picture
