Can't get mini-split blower wheel off motor shaft...

Hi ,

Any suggestions appreciated on getting the mini-split blower wheel off the motor shaft:

Unit is a Daikin ctx12axvju , set-screw is out , coils are raised on left side to allow the wheel to move. I can move the blower wheel 1" to the left but then it gets hung up and wont fully slide off the motor shaft. I suspect that either there is a burr on the steel motor shaft created by the set-screw or some other protrusion on the shaft . I am able to get a pry bar between the end of the blower wheel and the plastic housing then pry as hard as I dare, everything is plastic and fragile . I tried putting oil in the set-screw hole and on the hub but still it wouldn't budge leftwards past 1". Frustrating .

I ended up not removing the wheel and just brushed and vacuumed it as best I could. Id really like to remove it and clean it properly.

    brush and vacuum is probably sufficient unless it is covered in grease or otherwise super filthy. there are various blower and fan pullers you may be able to use. you also may be able to hold the hub of the blower wheel and tap on the shaft if you can get the motor and blower out as an assembly.

    but i wouldn't worry about it unless you need to wash it in detergent.

    Try scouring YouTube for your model or their customer service. If you google that model # there are a couple of videos.
    Baffles my mind why manufactures don't make removing the blower wheel simple.

    I notice that some manufacturer's have gone to a mounting system that doesn't use a shaft/hub/set-screw and instead uses a interlocking pull-out hub. This is much easier to deal with and so much better. I guess they finally realized that a) the filtration system is totally insufficient b) the mandatory cleaning is a 2+ hour job for the inexperienced and still a pita for a person who does it regularly.

    Mini-splits have many advantages but the air filtration is not one of them.

    Try using emery cloth on the shaft where the hang up is or a small emery drum on a Dremel tool on the shaft.

    collet style and setscrew style hubs have both been around for somewhere around a century.
