    Many things are like that.

If you have a roof top unit that is AC and gas heat and the gas HX fails do you replace the entire unit or the hx?

You look at the age of the age of the unit and its general condition. If the unit is in decent shape, you change the HX all the controls stay the same.

Changing a RTU HX may take 2 guys half a day give or take. In most cases you can do it without a crane or maybe only a sign crane.

Granted changing a boiler block or sections is more involved but if the burner, controls and jacket are in good shape why not?

The insurance co only allowed a block replacement ? I was thinking why ?

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    No insurance claim.

    2 guys, no crane.

I read that 8 gallons/month for 8 units (plus store) is a reasonable amount. Should I be searching (again) for a leak?

@EBEBRATT-Ed was talking about rooftop units where there is a whole ac system and heating hx all in one box and only one part failed. if just replacing the hx that can usually be hoisted on to the roof, replacing the whole unit usually requires a crane to get it on the roof.
