"Huson Valley" is a bit vague. There is a chance that @Charlie from wmass might be interested in the northern part. Not sure he does work in New York State, though.

They burned a great deal of Anthracite coal in that boiler. Is it an Iron Fireman boiler? It looks exactly like a converted Iron Fireman coal stoker boiler from the State of Washington.

The existing water heater cannot share the same chimney. You can purchase a new steam boiler with a domestic coil if you wish to eliminate the second oil burner.

You appear to have enough room in the old coal room ceiling for the installation of a double drop header to make dry steam too.

@leonz two oil burners can certainly share the same chimney.

People talk about headers with no swing joints prying the boiler apart but that old beast can take it I guess.

Maybe @JohnNY or @Mad Dog_2 would know someone or consult.

@leonz , that's a Heat Extractor boiler made by National Radiator Co. It probably dates to the late 1940s-early 1950s.

    Hello Steamhead,

Thank you for clarifying my mistaking it for an Iron Fireman as it has red jacketing on the sides. I could not read the medallion attached to the front of the boilers sheet metal jacket.

Do you know whether these coal boilers were hand fired or had pot stokers??

Could be either- depends on the installation.

So, for the plumbing code it's just like multiple coal boilers can share the same chimney?

The only code restrictions on chimney usage is that it has to be large enough to accept the BTU load and both appliances need to either be solid fuel or liquid fuel you cannot have a liquid fuel vent into a solid fuel chimney or vice versa. All of the gases and heating oils are considered liquid fuel. Coal, wood, pellets, corn stalks, and other biomass fuels are solid fuel.

Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

The boiler is a National Radiator Company series 300 National Heat Extractor. Boiler # A306. Not that it indicates what it required after 50 years of house upgrades. I’m still hoping someone can lead us to a very steam competent company that is willing to work in zip code 12410 to replace the boiler next summer. Again I’m not looking for cheap. I’m looking for experience.

Look in the "find a contractor" link at the top, there are several very good contractors in NY. @JohnNY and @Mad Dog_2 are the first I'd try to see if they can do work out of the city but there are several others to try as well especially if you are trying to do it in the off season.
