Need to replace 2 radiators in Woodside, Queens, NY

Hi All,

I need to replace 2 steam radiators because their vent is at the top instead of middle. The vents shut off soon after the radiator starts filling up with steam. The room feels cold. Any suggestions on heating contractors who will work in Woodside, Queens, NY?

I appreciate your help.

Regards

Paddy

you have to replace them? Is there no place for a vent in the middle?

Do you know if the correct size vent was installed on your radiator? Who told you they need to be replaced, A licensed steam plumber? A steam radiator only needs to be replaced if it is damaged in some way if it was sized correctly to begin with.

Steam radiator vents push the atmospheric air out of the cold radiator only at the speed of the steam coming from the boiler through the riser to the bottom or top of the radiator and no faster based on the size of the vent used on the radiator and whether the radiator is properly pitched back to drain the condensate back to the boiler if it is a bottom fed radiator.

I would borrow a 4 foot level from someone you know to check and see if the radiator is level and if it is it needs to be shimmed on the vent side of the radiator to create the pitch needed for the condensate to drain back to the boiler.

Your existing radiator vents may be clogged with dirt or dust and need replacing or the boiler needs work.

@paddys , post some pics of your radiators. I'll bet there's a proper place for a steam vent on them, just have to drill and tap it.
