Utica Steam Boiler Runs for ~30 Minutes then Shuts Down

Hello,

I’m having some issues with my steam boiler and could use some advice.

It’s a Utica Boiler model PEG225BDE. Had my boiler guy come out for an annual checkup that wound up in getting the pilot assembly and thermocouple replaced.

The boiler ran like a champ for the last 5 days. Last night I came home and noticed the pilot was out. I re-lit the pilot and things were fine for about 30 minutes. I could hear the radiators running and getting warm before I noticed they stopped.

I went downstairs and noticed the pilot was out again. I tried to re-light it for a second time and the same thing happened - ran fine for about 30 minutes before shutting down again.

Any idea on what the issue could be? Thermostat issue? Gas supply issue?

That’s the plan. He’s a person I’ve gotten to be friendly with so I’d like to get an idea of what it could be before he comes back.

Been tinkering with it today and two things to add

    1. The boiler was a little full, I drained about 2 gallons to get it to proper water level. This did not help.

    2. I noticed that when the thermostat reaches temperature, it shuts down the burners but this is also when the pilot light goes out. The pilot does not stay on after the burners go off.

Could be the thermocouple if it is a standing pilot.

    Poor pilot flame quality.

Pilot flame not heating the thermocouple correctly (thermocouple position relative to the flame).

    Bad thermocouple.

most likely the new pilot isn't adjusted or positioned properly. Also possible the boiler is leaking on it. what was wrong with the old pilot? thermocouples wear out after a few years to a few decades. pilot burners sometimes rust out, but it is a lot less common.
