Drilling into metal firebox or not

I want to install a top damper on my chimney. I have a metal firebox though and all instructions show drilling into the masonry to install the bracket for the cable handle. It feels like not a good idea to drill into the metal to attach the bracket needed or should I install it on the brick on the edge of the fireplace?

Probably shouldn't drill the firebox even though it could be sealed and the screws will cover the holes probably not a good idea.

Drill into the brick. It would be very hard to seal a hole in the metal firebox, and you really don't want flame and combustion gas to get in back around it…
