Order of components

I'm about to rebuild the crossover at the end of a long main. Between the main and the return we currently have a valve into a strainer into an F&T.

Can I put the valve after the strainer instead? This is just due to clearance issues between the trap outlet and the cleanout on the strainer.

No reason not to. But a few assumptions here. First, the F&T is there because you have a parallel flow main and you want the condensate to get into the dry return. Second, this is a "standard" pressure (1.5 psig cutout) system rather than a vapour (0.5 psig cutout. Third, there is no way to reach a wet return with the condensate. Fourth, you have no way to use a drip loop (water seal) instead — too much pressure or not enough depth. Fifth, you have additional main venting on that main (an F&T is a lousy main vent).

Yes sir. All correct assumptions except for the main vents. I'm well aware of how poor F&Ts vent though, and hope to have branches full of Gortons sprouting before too long. Thanks Jamie

the valve is before the strainer so you can service the strainer. if your not worried about that it doesn't matter
