Asbestos?

Trying to replace a flange gasket on this old Weil McLain. Looks to be some white fibrous material lining the gasket. Could be asbestos but not sure. Anyone seen this before?

Have to have it tested to know for sure. Could be asbestos, could be cotton or wool or something like that.

not sure. Never tried that. We’ll probably end up having it tested just curious if anyone has run across it and what the result of it was. Of course anything is possible.

It is composition sheet gasket. there were all sorts of formulas, some that used asbestos as the base, some that use other fibers. It is like caulk or roof cement or glazing compound or spackle/joint compound. There are all sorts of things mixed in them.

without having samples analyzed there is no way of knowing.

When in doubt, treat it as ACM (Asbestos Containing Material). Mad Dog

What's the production date on the boiler? Weil is a major company, I don't think they'd use asbestos after the ban, which I believe was right around 1990.

Asbestos was possibly banned in 2017. In 1990 there was a weird rule where materials that were less than 1% asbestos weren't asbestos and asbestos couldn't be used for any new uses.
