Old Broken Solenoid Valve

I hope someone can help! I have an older boiler that I use to heat the house. It works fantasticallty…except for the valve that shuts the gas off. It is a solenoid valve and it is pretty beat up. It rarely shuts off properly. Any ideas?

Can you take a picture of the whole gas train? If it is sticking it should be replaced with a modern combination valve that will contain the valve, regulator, and pilot safety. It will require someone that understands combustion to set up the new valve properly.

I am definitely having a pro do this. I am a newbie and do not want to tackle it. The gas train?? @mattmia2

The valves and regulators and pilot valve and pilot safety that controls the gas.

The valve sticking is a safety issue. If it sticks at the wrong time it can overheat the appliance and start a fire or less likely cause an explosion.

@mattmia2 As soon as I get home from work, I'll get photos. Thanks for chiming in. Much appreciated.

McMaster Carr and Supply House.com both have a wide selection of these. You going to need to know voltage (probably 24 volt) Pipe size, BTU rating of boiler (input). Pressure drop would be good to know but you may not have that.

The old valve is a White Rogers, still in business. If you find the right supplier they can match that up.

Your problem will be finding someone willing to fix it.

What is the Make, Model number and Serial number of this unit. You will need a combination gas valve and perhaps also a 24 volt transformer. How about a picture of the pilot assembly? It looks like a complete recontrol kit. I am not sure how much you want to spend for parts plus labor. It may be better to think about applying what all that would cost plus labor and invest in a new system. If you have more questions call me at 401-437-0557 ask for Tim.

it looks like it has a lighter for the pilot too although other than hooking it up that won't affect the replacement.

This may work, but upgrading to a more modern gas valve is probably the safer option.
