Does this look normal for the flame of a gas water heater?

as much as anyone can tell without test equipment. the orange is from sodium either in the air or on the surfaces

Hi, It's not normal. I think I'd start with removing and cleaning the burner. See what improvement that gives. I suspect "gunk" has built up on the burner and is impeding gas/air flow.

Flame looks long and lazy to me. I would also check the flue pipe and chimney.

You should have the water heaters gas pressure tested and serviced.

Is this a water heater that was purchased at a big box store? If so thats ok, but one brand (I don't remember which one) had a run of bad gas valves. Get it looked at. Its probably covered in warranty.

It’s a Rheem from HD. I’m unable to post a .mov video file.

I think thats the one. Get in touch with HD. It will most likely be a warranty covered new burner and gas valve replacement.

Have someone from a gas company that does service take a look at it. It is really hard to tell if you have a problem as the videos of the flame are not conclusive with out some combustion testing. Do not jump to conclusions get it tested!
