Help with old Magic Chef Forced Air Gas Furnace

Hi, I have an old Magic Chef EGA100D-12 gas forced air furnace. It went out a week ago so I cleaned the sensor and it worked for about 4 days, now the pilot light does ignite and will fire up but shuts down after a few minutes or less. Pulled out the burner tray and tried cleaning it again but still the same results as stated above. This unit as most know is a little bit of work to pull the burner tray so don't want to do it a 3rd time.

It uses Robertshaw SP715A spark igniter and the old Honeywell fan limit switch that I plan to check tomorrow. I did find a short in thermostat wire and resolved that when it first went out. This unit is located in the attic and probably has not been serviced in a long time but I did clean the blower and inside after pics were taken.

My question is can I use a universal pilot light assembly with sensor? It has been hard to locate the exact one used in the furnace now.

I do hear the gas valve work and have a manometer but have not tested that yet …it is also an old gas valve.

You may want to check out the grounds and connections first . Yes you can upgrade the control . I would also replace the pilot assembly on the same job …

There was an error rendering this rich post.

That furnace has earned a long overdue retirement

the furnace is installed on fireboard, and yes it's way overdue to be replaced…was just trying to get it through the rest of the cold season so did not want to keep replacing parts since it needs to be replaced. The attic has very little room in the stair well to bring up a new furnace. They must have built the house around the furnace lol.

@ Big ED_4, yeah I checked all the grounds and connections , just really leaning towards the pilot light assembly since cleaning it worked for a few days …was thinking of a new honeywell spark ignition module too but was trying not to keep putting money into what will be replaced. Today I will try going through testing the wires one more time ..

Why is there dust on everything inside that cabinet?

the dust was there when I first took the pictures, I cleaned everything after cleaning the sensor and pulling out the tray….don't think this was serviced in a long time and the attic has blow in insulation with a window that is missing

The dust around the access door opening screams poor duct work!

The ID tag states Maximum external static pressure .20 "

Get the static pressure tested and corrected.

I'd also get a combustion Analyss performed before using that furnace.

thanks pecmsg, yeah I agree …my manometer doesn't have the probes but will for sure just get the combustion tested and static pressure..

This isn't worth getting in trouble over. Put on a sweatshirt and have it replaced. Have the new one hung. Go 90+% and plug the existing chimney.
