Radiant Therapy.....

Working summers since age 9, 8 years of tackle football, 5 years of rugby, 40 years of Plumbing & yanking boiler sections up & out of basements takes it toll…Usually don't sleep well or more than a few hours at a clip.
This morning at 3am I plunked down on the mudroom floor with a pillow & blanket with my trusty GSHP Tillman & slept like a baby for 3.5 hours!!

Not sure my story would be considered Radiant Therapy, but here goes.
Grew up in a house with a "high temperature" radiant slab fitted with copper tubing. Typical 1950's Levittown house with wall to wall carpeting back in the 1970's. We loved the radiant heat, but I'm guessing the boiler water temp was set pretty high to overcome the thick carpet and padding. Kitchen and bathroom had tile flooring, we learned to dance on these floors on bitter cold days.
On Friday nights, we used to watch tv at night with our pillows while laying on the newly carpeted living room floor. My brothers and I quickly learned that if you accidentally fell asleep, you would start to bake. I recall my chest feeling like I got sunburn from the radiant floors. The good old days…

It takes its toll alright. I made it to 65 then the wheels came off. At 65 I could still waste the 40 year olds I worked with. Oh, I had my share of aches and pains and work wasn't as easy but I could "fake it" really good for 8-10hours 5 days a week. and keep up my end.
Played softball for 20 years until I figured out that wouldn't pay the bills.
Too many years with no vacations or only 1 week vacation and too much overtime + teaching at the union hall at nights.
Seems the older you get the less you sleep.

Saw my doctor. Complained that I needed some "Radiant therapy" (not my exact words).
He said try over the counter Aleve for two weeks, take one in the morning and one in the evening with this prescribed med. to protect your stomach.
I did what he said, and sure enough, I'm not walking around in pain any longer. Sleeping better, moving better and climbing stairs. My joints don't feel like Dorothy and the Scarecrow just found me in the woods.
My radiant therapy…try it?

Sleep patterns change as we get older. Daylight Saving Time doesn't help. I'm usually reading the most boring book I can find at 3 a.m. every night. It's been a real winter this year with plenty of "freeze-ups" and "no heats."

Bumps, bruises, aches and pains are a part of life. The difference is that when we were young, they were the result of things that made sense - like Mad Dog getting tackled in football, I managed to run over myself with an ATV once, and I've jumped/fallen off a LOT of things that I never should have been on top of. I think of those type of hurts as 'earned' - probably could have been avoided, but it was fun getting there.
Now in my (very) late 50s, the aches and pains are for entirely different reasons. Stood up too fast, slept wrong, sneezed too hard, and my personal favorite, "unknown cause". It's part of growing old(er). As Toby Keith says, I'm not as good as I once was…
In any case, my nearly 85 year old mother likes to say that "It's Hell getting old, but it beats the alternative." She has a point. I guess.
Have a safe week everyone.

Farmer Ted...now that you mention it : every summer on the Farm...cow-kicked a few times, smooshed against a big Holstein & the barn wall. Stepped on by 1200lb thoroughbreds. A few horse kicks to body that sent you across the Barnyard..ha ha. As Ma Joad said...: "Hey! It's better than dyin' young!" Mad Dog
