Balancing

Working at 100+ y/o church and there is years and years of abandoned equipment.

Currently we cannot seem to get above 68* in main church, previously we could reach temps of 75*+ within an hour or two of firing boiler now we’re lucky to reach 65*.

Additionally, the front vestibule of the church has always been low to mid 60* range. Now we are sitting at 89* with a bathroom so hot no one can use it.
Any ideas what could have caused this dramatic change?

Something tripped a zone valve. Can they be moved manually?

Trying to squeeze the best out of a Weil-McLain JB-5 running a 1912 1 pipe system.

How about a serious lack of maintenance with nobody to care for the mechanicals on a yearly basis and the expectation by the congregation that it will run by itself forever!!

ha good point. The real question i'm asking myself is do i replace/repair existing zone valves or do i remove them completely? The care taker of church claims those zones pictured haven't worked in years (then again he may not know a dam thing) Don't you love neglected systems with no record of anything!?

I like messing with old original stuff. It talks to me.

See if the old valve can be operated manually and if it's in sound mechanical condition. Then do the same with the motor. Try the motor with power and see if it's worthy.

But if you're not like me or if you're not into running an American Iron heating museum, take out a loan and buy new ones.
