Btu Meters

I have a potential job coming up that we plan to use btu meters to allow each unit to be billed separately for heating. Do you folks have any recommendations?

    Local jurisdiction has no trouble with them

    Does your local bureau of weights and measures need to get involved? The people that put the Approval sticker on Gas pumps and the lunch meat scales at the local supermarket? That can be a hassle if someone feels that their particular meter is not accurate. I actually saw something about being registered as a utility in order to meter a product (BTUs) to the public (A Rental or Condo unit owner)

    I did install one for a customer that provided chilled water and heated water to a commercial property he owned. all the rental rooms in a Bed and Breakfast were heated by the same boiler and chiller that a retail store on the first floor ws connected to. I hooked it up and the property owner made the deal with the retail store owner. I never had anything to do with it after I connected it. Can't tell you if it was successful or not. But there is a lot of new technology since 1990 when I installed that system.

    After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

    Caleffi Conteca is an option :) We did an apartment building up near Oshkosh a few years back. There may be a case study on that on the website.

    I find it really telling how such a huge fuss is made over thier usage in the US. As I understand it, they have been used for decades in the rest of the world. We are so in the dark ages in the U.S., it seems. It's just like theuse of TRV's…the far most common response is "That's too expensive"……Facepalm.

    Thanks Hot Rod for that option. I didn't know Calleffi made one. Thier are lots of manufacturers of these products. I think I used OMRON or Omicon a number of years ago.

    Just a few years ago a bunch of manufacturers got together and had an ASTM E 3137 standard developed. So if the equipment is listed to that standard it accepted to be used for billing, and inspectors may want to see that stamp.

    Them US standard is pretty much the same as other standards around the world.

    Hot rod,, a question. Are these stand alone meters that the building owner can just read monthly or do they need a building automation system to access readings?

    most have control that you can read at anytime if you are in front if it. There are usually lead/ wire to lock in the sensors and keep the meter from being removed

    I think they all have some sort of BAS connection option

    Basically a water meter, two sensors and a data logger

    @The Steam Whisperer

    HBX has btu meters. I rep them through Arctic Heat Pumps. I can help you with that if you are interested.
