Foghorn noise with a Lochinvar boiler
085 When the temperature nears 10 Deg F my boiler makes a foghorn sound. Lasts approx. 30 to 60 seconds. Just long enough to shut off before I can get to the boiler to try and see where the sound might come from. I have the boiler maintained yearly and this has been happening since 2013. Every year the technician tells me everything checks out fine. Of course the foghorn noise never occurs while they are here. Pressures have been tested, gas analysis has been right on and so on. For some reason this year has been especially bad. Neighbors are complaining.
Talked with Lochinvar and get zero help. Any ideas?

It may be a CSST noise, but that's a lot less common than an improperly adjusted gas valve. If your "technician" cannot take care of the sound, you should be looking for a new technician who actually knows what they're doing. The boiler needs to be put into service mode and manually adjusted to the fan speed/firing rate where the noise is occurring, while the combustion analyzer is being used.

the boiler was installed in 2012 and has had this problem ever since. I have had at least 6 different companies that claim to service this type of boiler. Of course they all claim that every thing checks out fine. The original installer did contact Lochinvar and they changed a few things but nothing has helped. That company doesn’t respond anymore!

Oh yes the old foghorn…Propane or natural gas? can you please share the combustion results and your Elevation.W

I have natural gas and I will see if I have the results on the tests performed.

I had this problem with a newly installed Loch. Noble about 7-8 years ago. It was a pernicious problem. Local Loch. rep was very good about staying on the problem. Combustion numbers and gas pressure etc. were all on spec. We had to pull in the regional rep as well. The fog horning happened at a certain fan speed as the boiler ramped up and again as it ramped back down. I believe (trying to remember) that they "skipped-over" that particular fan speed by changing something on the motherboard back at the "home office" in MA. The boiler has been fine ever since. All that I did was to swap out motherboards.

Low is lean. Pitch is rich. Check combustion analysis and tune gas valve to spec. They whack out after years of service. If it won’t tune, then gas valve is kicked.
