Should this pipe be on an angle going back to furnace? Thanks

Pictures would help. Furnace, Forced air heat ? Or steam heat, condensate returning to a boiler ? Boiler pipes most often have a pitch to them, since gravity will help move the water.

Is this a true dry return for a two pipe system, or a steam main extension — often referred to as a dry return — in a one pipe system?
