Can someone explain the vent on the return at the boiler? I don't understand, it makes no sense to the 'steam model' in my head. I thought main vents were supposed to be at the end of the horizontal runs, or even at the tops of the runs to let the cold air out and let steam get to the rads.
Are Crown's good? it's config looks like it would work well for replacing the Smith I'm considering pitching.

One way to look at it is that the mains end where they drop down below the water level as returns. The vent can be at any point after the last radiator leaves the main. Your plumber put them near the boiler.
