I'm sure the boiler manufacturers have done many many experiments over the decades. They generally don't want to share them because they don't want their competitors using the data that they didn't pay for.

Because no one cares for multiple reasons.

Most view steam heat as obsolete and there's very little money in it in the grand scheme of things.

Also, when people do actually do tests and post results, they get ignored or made fun of if the results don't agree with people's beliefs.

Since no one installs new steam heat anymore, I wonder what the "death rate" for how many steam boilers are sold every year is? I imagine it must drop a little every year as steam buildings are converted to hot water or heat pump and good steam installers are going the way of the do-do bird.

I imagine as time goes on parts and pieces will become more expensive.

I think a 1-pipe is simpler and more reliable, although the reliability of vents vs traps could be argued I guess.

But I like that a two-pipe system can use smaller pipe sizes and can be modulated easier on the fly.

I would put a 2-pipe system into a new house, no question about it.

The deciding factor was the ability to modulate individual rads. "On the fly" as you said.
