Burnham ODR - anomalous behavior after install

I installed the Burnham ODR on my ES2 boiler today and observed a couple of anomalies:

  1. After running for some time, I noticed that with a call for heat, the circulator was still running but the boiler was reporting that it was in Standby (Status 1) instead of Running (Status 8). As I watched, the boiler then fired up again going through the intermediate states (Waiting For Damper To Open, Spark, Flame Proving) before ending up in Status 8 where it should have been.
I've never seen this behavior before installing the ODR.
  2. With the Boost set to 30, I observed the Setpoint go from the initial value of 153 to 163 after 30 minutes. After another 30 minutes it then went to 170.
I would have expected it to go to 173. (the High Boiler Water Temperature is set to 180).

Any thoughts?

The ODR is controlling the boiler circulating water temperature — as it should — maximize efficiency and minimize cycling. If it's not delivering enough heat, you may need to adjust the settings for the ODR curve.

    1. Sounds like pre-purge. That’s a setting, maybe you never noticed it before?
    2. Likewise. Maybe it’s saying 7 then the last step is 10F?

@Jamie Hall - yes it seems to be doing the job. I was just expecting it to increase to 173, then I suppose to 180 if it ran another 30 minutes.

    @Hot_water_fan - pre-purge is a setting that's not available on my boiler.
    Available settings (Adjustment Mode Options):

    • HL_ (170 F) Adjust High Limit Setting
    • dF_ (15 F) Adjust Limit Differential
    • rSt (OFF) Reset Lockout
    • F-C (F) Select degrees F or C mode

The ES2 IO Manual does document this condition (see below). I did confirm that when this condition is occurring, the boiler temperature is above the setpoint established by the ODR. Once it drops 15 degrees below the setpoint the boiler fires and transitions to status=8 (Running).
The second condition does not apply to my setup as Start Temperature and Circulator Pre-purge parameters are not present.

It just seems odd to me that with StA 1 (Standby) sometimes the circulator is on and sometimes it is off.
Maybe they should have had an additional status to distinguish these two situations.

Pre-purge isn’t available but is listed in the manual?
