8way through skim hole?

Can I add 8way through the skim hole? Is that what this is?

    yes, and yes,

use less than the instructions say, @ethicalpaul will advise,

for what purpose are you adding it?

my boiler water is very dirty and I use a lot of make-up water. I fixed quite a few leaks at the radiators and the water level seems to have stabilized. I was going to flush with 8way to clean out and then refill at a higher pH.

I’ve watched Paul’s YouTube videos and working off that in terms of pH level.

I added mine at pressure relief valve but as your pipes are soldered that will be a bit of a chore.

remove your cap and add an elbo

I agree with @TKPK Remove the cap and add an elbow and a long nipple and pour it in. Drain the boiler down low first. You have to get the leaks fix though as adding 8 way before fixing the leaks will not do much good.

found one more leak between the valve and union in the living room radiator. A slow drip. Now I need to research how to replace that. If I buy a valve on supply house do they send with a matching union/spud?

If it's a slow drip at the union you can possibly get away with teflon tape and pipe dope for a quick fix. Replacing the valve if you have not done it before is more time consuming without the right tools. Yes you do get the spud and the union when you order the radiator valve

sounds like you have a plan.
I would probably drain completely to get out as much mud as possible

Then add about 1/2 cup of 8-way with the refill water.

Expect this to free up more mud and scale.

If it does try to let it run for a week or so and drain again, again adding about 1/2 cup of 8-way

This may have to be repeated

But eventually you will have a clean(ish) boiler that is no longer producing much brown water and won’t have to be drained hardly at all

But this is not an exact set of steps, it depends how much scale and sediment you have.

If you get surging at any point you will have to drain and refill right then. Surging isn’t good
