Oil / boiler … 2 thermostats on 1 zone .
good morning new to posting on this forum but have enjoying reading the stories for awhile now . The time has come for me to pick some of these experienced minds .
So I am helping out running this small building a friend recently bought . 2 apts and 3 small commercial spaces .
One boiler to heat the entire building . Apartments have baseboard radiators and the commercial space have a mix of baseboard and blowers on the wall .
One of the apartments is a duplex and has a thermostat on ea floor but the entire apartment is run piped on one zone .
so it appears to me that if the thermostats on the first floor isn’t calling for heat then the thermastat on the second floor wont be able to get any heat n its own .
not sure if this makes sense to you guys . So it’s kinda like 1st fl thermastat is controlling thermastat
let’s say it 65 degrees in apt on both floors in both ex
Ex 1 First floor therm is set at 68 , second floor is set at 68 . Both floors will get heat because the first floor is call ing for heat .
Ex 2 First floor is set 64 and second floor is set at 67
Second floor will not get any heat until temp drops to 64 and the 1st floor calls for heat . .then heat will circulate to both floors .
Any way to solnpve this so that either thermastat can work independently ?
But still be in same zone ?
thanks

You can wire the thermostats in several ways. If you want them to work so that the heat is on if either one is calling, wire them in parallel. If you want them to work so that they both have to be calling at once, wire them in series. If you want to make one of them a dummy, just don't connect it…

And may I add. This will work for conventional thermostats. It can still be done with smart thermostats, but it's a lot trickier to wire.

Jamie nailed it.
This is parallel wiring. in this design both thermostats will operate the burner and zone pump/valve. This may be uncomfortable for someone that likes their apartment cooler that others. That is because the thermostat that is set higher will control both apartments.
This is SERIES wiring desing. how your thermostats are currently connected. This may be uncomfortable for someone that likes their apartment warmer that others. That is because the thermostat that is set lower will control both apartments.
Sometimes a landlord will disconnect a thermostat without removing it from the wall. The disconnected thermostat will no longer operate anything, but the person in the apartment with the disconnected thermostat may not notice for some time. When they do notice it, the landlord can say that the thermostat from the other apartment must be controling the temperature at this time. And that they will look into the problem.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?
