Main vent location
I’m installing a main vent into my crippled, vent-less two pipe vapor system. Ideally I’d want to tap into the pipe at the highest part of the dry return (horizontal), but honestly I can’t find a practical reason not to tap into the vertical going back to the boiler. The vertical give me a lot more room for the gorton #2, it’ll be a ton easier (I’m cutting a hole with a carbide plug cutter and putting in a saddle - no need to disturb my old pipes…) and it’ll still be well, well, above the waterline, like 4ft. Crazy? Red circle shows where I “should” tap, blue circle shows where I want to tap

personally I don’t like vent taps on the vertical because the water flows down the walls of the vertical pipe and has a chance to get carried to the vent.
But it will probably be fine
Remember that you can put the vent anywhere after the last radiator runout—you don’t have to put it at the very end of the main. There’s no need to let steam heat up all that pipe

that’s exactly what they did! The air just gets mushed around and the system heats but slow with a lot of cycling.
