How would i thread new pig tail directly into boiler?

Reading older posts, it seems that the pig tail is best threaded directly into the boiler. I realize i would have to buy an angle tail. However unless im missing something, how would i connect the pressure gauge?

If you're replacing the pigtail, consider making a water trap out of brass pipe, tees and ells. Easier to maintain and configurable as you like.

I can't really see a huge difference between you photo and having the pigtail in the boiler directly…I guess less space for gunk to collect, but I can't picture it mattering.

But there is a pigtail that is like 270 degrees instead of 360 like the one in your photo that works. Then you can put the tee and the gauge above the pigtail. I'll try to find a picture:

Here you go, from supplyhouse. They call it an "angle" pigtail vs a "straight" one like yours:

But yeah, agree with @delcrossv , a trap made out of nipples and fittings is better (even though my inspector disagreed 😅)

What you have is fine but it should be taken apart and cleaned occassionally…..some recommend yearly.

And all the fittings should be brass….not black pipe or galvanized pipe.

I would put a brass union between the tee and the pigtail to make it easier to remove and clean.

I'd put the gauge after the water trap in the pigtail so it also gets protected from steam.

The only difference would be the ease of removal for cleaning. Either way they are a pain to remove and clean, which is why piping is better.
