Timer, storage tank and combi boiler

Hi all,

Hope you can help. We just moved in to a new house so trying to figure out the heating system. There is a valiant ecoTec plus 637 boiler, there are two Hive thermostatic controllers and a timer which seems to overide everything.

I am trying to just have the boiler heat the hot water as and when required but it seems to be set up to heat the water in the storage tank and the radiators only. Basically we only get hot water from the tap when we allow it to heat the water in the tank and it is stored as hot water. I have tried turning the tap button to off but then there is no hot water heated by the boiler on demand.

There are two switches on the wall to heat the hot water tank electrically in the event there is no gas but these are turned off.

Be grateful for any advice you can offer, thank you very much.

Judging by the wiring, this system is not in North America, where most of the folks on this board are located. We do things a bit differently across the pond. Of course, the basic principles remain the same.

I looked up that boiler online. It is not a "Combi" and cannot heat tapwater for your faucets on demand. It is designed to heat a domestic hot water storage tank, and radiators for space heating. So although what you have may not be what you are accustomed to, it sounds as if it is operating normally.

That's what we on the west side of the pond call an indirect tank — though yours seems to have electric backup. What is supposed to happen is that a sensor in the tank senses when the stored water cools off and fires up the boiler and a pump, which circulates water (probably in a separate loop) which in turn heats up the tank.

It is not an on-demand system, and there is no way to set it up to become one.
