Recessed radiator grills

We moved into a house with these recessed cast iron radiators. We did some work to restore them and are looking for grills. I ordered one online from AF Supply but unfortunately it doesn't fit. I think these are American Standard Sunrads but I'm not sure. I'm in Northern New Jersey. Any recommendations for places that might have them or could make them? Thanks!

What do you mean by grills? What is wrong with them as is? Is this for child protection?

There may have been a lower cover that covers some of the supply piping.

That is how that particular radiator was done. There is no additional cover needed. I'm an not aware of any factory made cover for that unit. There are convector type radiators that have covers but they were not intended for that particular radiator.

The cover is to create a channel for the convection air to cross over the element (what is behind the cover) and come out hot at the top of the convector cabinet. The Cast Iron radiator you pictured has that convection channel built into its design and requires no cover to operate properly. Anything you add to the front of air can only decrease the air flow and the heating output.

But if you look closely, there is a manual air vent for "Water Radiators" in the Steam Radiator vent location. Also, the Water Vent location just above it appears to have no hole or thread tapping for a vent. So, either you have the wrong vent in the right location for a steams system, or you have the right vent in the wrong location for a water system.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

OCS makes a similar type of radiator and they do supply grills for them. Not sure if they'd fit yours, but you could call and ask:

The lower covers are slotted sheet metal. They can be a nuisance to keep in place so that might be why they’re gone. They’re old so you’ll probably have trouble finding the right size replacement.
Can you or someone fabricate a replacement to suit your taste?
