Viessmann cast iron boiler replacement.

Here's an interesting one…
My client is absolutely in love with this Viessmann Atol boiler but now that it's 32 years old, it's showing its age, and not quite as reliable as it once was.
It's been working all it's life on ODR, no thermostats, and a three way mixing valve for boiler protection.
We're both sorry to see it go, but it's time.

What are you planning on installing in its place?

I'm not sure yet but I'm probably going with a Weil-McLain CGa with pri-sec piping and a simple Taco PC700 boiler control.

@JohnNY , is the Viessmann also atmospheric? I see its labeled NOx, and I've never seen that model before.

Some of the Crown boilers had those wet based sections, made by Viessmann in them. A rock solid boiler.

The smaller residential models Atolas had a 3rd aquastat that provided boiler protection by shutting off the circulator. All the aquastat sensors cap. tubes went into a triple well.

Yes, it is atmospheric and I hadn't seen it either until now. It was a big deal in its day

First of all, fantastic photo taking advantage of the natural light. Amazing how much a great photo shows all of the details. I especially liked the item that appears to be a flywheel on the back of the workbench. Timer near the boiler is intriguing as well.

I'm tempted to install a Weil-McLain Ultra, or a Lochinvar Knight, or a Viessmann B2HE…
The customer just isn't going to spend the money on a repipe to an HE installation. We're also re-using the indirect water heater.

John the CU3a can be piped like any old school boiler, if leaving the piping as is keeps costs down. It’s hard to imagine the owner paid large dough 30 years ago, and now wants to go on the cheap- give him the best!

It’s like pulling a G115 or an EK and installing a Smith or a Utica😀

Unfortunately, very few people put a value on their heating system anywhere close to A new kitchen, bathroom, car, boat, et cetera. At best, it's a necessary evil and at the bottom of the Totem pole. Sad but true. Mad Dog
