Plumbing in Paris

This device is on a cold water line that feeds the water heater. As you can see, it has a drain with an air gap and what looks like a drum trap which then goes into a drain. The drain is the vent for the lav directly below. I have no idea what it does.

The water heater sits above you when you’re sitting on the toilet. Space is at a premium.

I can’t tell from the pictures exactly what’s going on there, but I’ve seen several devices while traveling in Europe that reclaim heat from the plumbing drain. My guess is that’s what we’re looking at.

Possibly this is the pressure reducing valve combi safety valve being its discharging into a drain via a drum trap unless your photo is not showing the tank mounted safety valve that i believe is standard w any type of under pressure tank ? I would also assume that it also functions as a cold water shut off to the unit being i dont see any isolation valves. Europe is a different beast in all aspects being there plenty more acceptable of what has to be and as i experienced ions ago is the blue collar worker is highly respected more so then the white collar is here and there is no 24 hour emergency service because no one is less then anyone else and everybody needs to live outside of there work and its realized there, plus everybody gets annual maintenance at least in germany as i have seen and that also goes for annual chimney and from my experience plumbing stack snaking who would have thought . .I think its called a quality of life issue not a money money money issue thingy . Also over there i feel between the work being performed between different companies is more of a even playing field w out the trunk slammers being everything is on the books and quality is over the top in workmanship . Upon my visit i returned w a new attitude and worked harder to increase the quality of the work i performed after seeing some truly amazing quality work made me ashamed of most of the work i see w short cuts and improperly installed without any thoughts of future service w out a major investment $

sorry for the rants i guess its the Brazilian morning coffee

    peace and good luck clammy

drink some of that non sulfated wines wont get them here

  • I think clammy nailed it now that I look closer. There are some shutoffs as the hot and cold come out of the wall, but there’s a lever handle on the device which I’m sure is a ball valve and there’s no other relief valve on the tank.

So they have adjustable relief settings?

  • This is some exposed water piping in a supermarket. Another picture of the exposed circuit breakers right next to the front door.

I've been to Europe a few times. It is so amusing that you @Alan (California Radiant) Forbes do the same thing that I do. Take pictures of piping while there. I can't help myself either, my family just laughs and rolls their eyes.

Thanks for posting this. 😎 Have a great time.

Notice what appears to be the main breaker in that panel has GFCI protection.
So the entire panel is protected automatically. Of course, the entire panel gets shut off, but that could be better than the alternative.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

I think that is common in europe and Australia. I think it is also common in industrial services in the US, at least some sort of ground fault detection.
