That is good to hear and I hope it stays that way for you. But…, if it doesn't I would still verify the pitch on that stretch of pipe in the crawl space where the 12" section was replaced. I recall you saying the hammer got worse after that work was done. You mentioned earlier you were having someone in to rid the crawl space area of asbestos. If that happened did you or anyone get a chance to inspect the line?

@tsburris That is good news! Nice work! Happy wife, happy life. The vents were @Steamhead good call.

Yes. The asbestos is completely gone, and I had the entire system reinsulated with 2” fiberglass. I didnt inspect the 10’+ replacement line for pitch before reinsulating. Nor did I open up any lines (subterranean or otherwise) to check for clogs. Because Ive had such a tough time finding anyone who knows anything about these steam systems, i didnt want to open up anything or move any lines (for pitch) until I’d eliminated insulation and bigger vents first. I didnt trust myself to be able put the thing back together if I started taking it apart and moving things around. Plus, Ive learned with my old ‘68 Boston whaler and its ‘92 2-stroke Yamaha that anytime you try to fix one thing, you open up a new, more expensive problem!

So now that I have the Gortons and full new insulation, I’ll know that if I run into any future hammer issues, it will be something related to pitch or a clogged line, or maybe dirty water. Is that an OK assumption to make?

Yes. And, we'll want to hear how much fuel you saved with the insulation and Gortons.
