    Can you determine what that material is? If it is Terra cotta flakes from the liner, then a metal liner is in order.

    If it is just debris from a couple of bird nests, then clearing the base of the chimney may be all that is necessary

    it almost certainly is Terra cotta flakes from the liner

    Oh dear. That may be worse than at first appears -- not that that is bad enough. Is there a cleanout at the bottom of the chimney near the floor? If there is, start cleaning there... but it looks as though enough of the chimney lining has collapsed that you need a liner, and a really competent chimney person to install it and make sure that it is properly sized and connected to both appliances.

    Not aware of any cleanout. Will have someone to come in and install a new metal liner tmr.
