Filler pipes

I recently moved into a house that uses fuel oil for the furnace. When they came out to deliver my first delivery of fuel oil the driver suggested to my wife ( because I was not home at the time) that I needed to take the filler pipes apart and put some sort of compound on the threads. Not having owned a house that used fuel oil before can you recommend a product to use.
