We do it all the time and it works great if done correctly.

Use a firetube boiler, a magnetic dirt separator and power flush the old system thoroughly.

I actually just designed my own system w/ CI rads I have picked up over the years.
IBC SFC combi boiler. I installed a Fernox TF1 filter on the return, Filled the system w/ axiom filtered fill water.
Added cleaner to the system and ran it for 2 weeks.
Surprisingly I have not picked up a lot of junk in the mag filter.
The purge water was not crazy dirty.
I will add some inhibitor soon.

Ninety year old cast iron radiator system tied to a firetube modcon for the last seven years. Flushed with water when installed. Added Sentinel X100 inhibitor per mfg instructions and ph is checked every year. Boiler water is still clear. This is city water and I had it tested to make sure it was within the specs given by the boiler mfg.
