Customer has no heat, try to start fan making horrendous noise. Got new fan went to install swirl plates look like someone took a sandblaster to them. Inside gas/air duct looks oxidized. I havent had a chance to read the iom yet but am looking for direction to focus. Possible lead time of 2 weeks for the swirl plate.

Check the venting and the fresh air intake.  I suspect the exhaust gases are getting sucked into the intake air.

The manufacturer most likely says it's okay to use the concentric vent termination, but it's not recommended. It works as designed if installed in an ideal location with no winds. They write the intake and exhaust should be 12" apart both horizontally and vertically when piped separately but then list the concentric vent termination as ok. Makes no sense to me.

I've seen concentrics where the inner pipe wasn't seated in the socket on one end or the other (seen it both ways), letting flue gasses recirc. I've also seen 'em plumbed in backwards, I think that would increase the possibility of recirculation as well.
