How can I tell which way is on and off on an old valve with no markings

    What does it say under the handle?

    Unless it is really truly weird, clockwise will close it down -- but maybe not off. That looks like a throttling valve, not a stop valve.

    Yes, it’s a throttling valve. Those holes probably indicate levels of heat, typically, each space equals 10 square feet of EDR. Turning it clockwise should close it.

    Looks like it says "ON" under the handle.

    Oh and there is a screw in the back or something like that that lets you move the stop on the right to a different hole so you can set it to match the emitter so it doesn't put steam in the returns?
