My Sister's boiler. new boiler is on the way. My question is would the clogged heat exc hanger also cause short cycling? My thoughts are yes because the heat exchanger would not be able to dissipate the heat as it should. Please shed some light on the matter. Thanks

It might, depending on where the boiler temperature sensor is.

Is this a steam or hot-water system?

I would have tried to clean it, but I think it might leak if I do.

Clogged or even a heavy scale from hard water will cause that noise
Also efficiency takes a hit and short cycling can be a symptom

How us the boiler sized to the radiators attached. Oversizing is a common occurrence in those order systems

Well, as it turns out they decided not to get the new boiler. They are running the old one for the season. My thoughts were for replacement as it is from 1993. They don't have hard water but they had several insidious leaks that were neglected for years. I got the leaks fixed, and replaced the expansion tank that had a hole in it's side.

    Baseboard, and somewhat oversized.
