    I recall many years ago, threading 2" galv conduit out of the back of the van using 18" pipe wrench as the vise.

    Only a couple of threads but enough to learn not to make it a habit.

    You could thread something holding it with a pipe wrench in a pinch but it really isn't stable enough to make it fun...

    I had a floor in the van raised up with 2x6's, 3 spaces.

    This helped hold the long end of the pipe, the pipe wrench vise was on the steel floor of the van.

    Actually used 2 opposing wrenches so you just push down on the top one to stabilize the lower one.

    The best thing as @ChrisJ pointed out is an old Ridgid 65R threader. It is a geared threader so it threads easier than a standard die set. Its much easier on you or the pipe machine and you can adjust it for shorter or longer threads, And it will thread 1", 1 1/4, 1 1/2 or 2" with one set of dies

    The standard Ridgid 12R died work an electric threader pretty hard especially the 1 1/2 and 2" sizes and are pretty tough to thread with for 1 1/2 and 2" by hand

    There's no gears in a 65R that I know of.

    It's 1:1 but it only cuts 2 threads or so at a time and slowly pulls the dies outward causing the taper.  That's what makes it thread easier.

    Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

    @ChrisJ

    Your right I looked on Ridgid's site. The 65 threader is called a "manual receding threader". The larger threaders the 141 & 161 that do 2 1/2"-4" and up are called "geared receding threaders"
