Smart thermostat placement

I have a split level home with a boiler and a conventional thermostat upstairs and one downstairs. I leave the home vacant during the winter time and I would like to monitor the temperature while I’m away with a smart thermostat. Can I get away with just one or do I need two? If I place just one downstairs and keep the temperature between 55 and 60°F, I shouldn’t have to worry about the upstairs temperature, correct?

My house. I would wifi both. If one fails the zone will not get heat. A failed zone could mean frozen pipes in that zone.John Cockerill Exquisite Heat www.exqheat.com Precisions boiler control from indoor reset.0

If you are only going to do one thermostat, then I would place it at the lowest floor thermostat location. You may also have an optional remote sensor option on some thermostats. If you can monitor the temperature of more than one location at a time, that would be the best option.
And if @pecmsg chimes in about this he will say the best location for a NEST is in the trash can.
Personally, I like Nest.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?
