Looking for your guys thoughts as to what boiler I should replace this with. Customer bought home is converting to gas. Need 1088 sq ft was going to replace with a Peerless ECT06 with a Carlin jet burner because I like how they took the line off the plate and and cant find a gas steam with a plate this size.

What does that "line off the plate" do?

I'd suggest just replacing the oil burner with a gas power burner but i don't know what is going on with that near boiler piping. Is this 2 pipe? I'm very suspicious that there might be a mechanism from a vapor system in that horizontal tee looking thing.

Are you sure the EDR is actually 1088? I also am curious about the "line off the plate."

Its feeds the seperator, and with this many secondary circuits, I cant envision a better way to do it.

And yes I am sure I need 1088 sq ft. Although will admit I am not a vapor vacuum expert, but I do love themrodynamics and have been researching tediously as I do anyways, from early to early mid 1900s thermodynamics books on steam vapour vacuum. And I 100% appreciate that back then people were smart enough to do systems the right way. I did explain to customer that we could be in for suprise or 2 or more with existing steam traps, etc., as I was not able to fire the boiler before the old home owner ripped out the old oil tank.

So I will be replacing boiler and all near boiler piping ane components and repiping it exactly as it was as an ode to the original designer.  Kind of curious why they didnt do drop header then. Mustve been a reason no?

Bottom line when I put my name on a job it will be right and I will be sure of it. Which is why having even an inch of doubt that I am doing it right, I come here to the masters.

I’m not in the trades, just curious about and interested in steam systems. 1088 is a big job. What kind of radiators do they have? Must be huge or it’s a mansion.

The original boiler had a huge steam chest that separated the water from the steam. With a modern boiler you need to do that in the near boiler piping. You need to understand how it worked originally and figure out how to separate the steam and the water along with what the original piping did. Just putting it back the way it is now without knowing why it is that way is asking for trouble.

I see at least 2 hot water loops off it too,I suspect one is an indirect. It looks like those are running off an old shell and tube hx on the floor?

EDIT. I see the hot water heater is an oil direct fired so they are just 2 hot water loops.

I also see some sort of a vapor device behind the boiler.

Looks like a lot going on there, Parallel flow and Counter flow Steam and hot water heat. The plate connection was probably just convenient.

Megasteam only goes up to 629, but the gas SteamMax goes up to 1396 sq ft. https://usboiler.net/product/steammax-gas-fired-boiler

I think that's a Weil-McLain 76 or 78 series boiler. These evolved into the now-discontinued 80 series, which was our go-to boiler in that range. No word on whether W-M is going to fill the gap between the SGO and the 88 series yet.

I see what the line off the plate does now- it goes into that shell-and-tube HX. The hot-water loops off the HX are under the usual pressure and have their own expansion tank.

The Vapor device shown is a boiler return trap. I can't see a name on it but it looks like a Trane. Do the radiators have old Trane valves and traps on them?

    Looking for your guys thoughts...

Greenwhich CT ? I can't believe I'm the first one to suggest heat pump Kinda reckless to replace it with gas, given the recent revelations on health regarding gas appliances and the movement of the handful of cities mandating the move to all electric. Do you not care about the climate? Also given today's date you should also consider rewording the "your guys" that can be taken as offensive. While that's not my preferred pronoun I'm ok with that wording for the record. Just don't want to see you get in trouble. Stay safe.

I still reserve the right to heat and cool my property as I wish.

Let's get back on track and discuss the specifics of the @JacquesD's system. Thanks!

Don't forget about the heat for the cement pond.

Not sure if that is your client's home. The home pictured was built for the founder of American Standard in 1930. That may be a clue as to the type of Steam system.

Is that a big gold critter by the cement pond?
