Electric slab heat thermostat Smith-Gates

I bought a place that has electric heat in basement slab. The slab and now room temp is rising and it won’t shut off. Turned off breakers. 
Want to change out the smith-gates stat what can I use

    That may be a very interesting project. It looks to me (I can't find the literature on that thermostat) that that may be the variety with a capillary to the sensor buried in the slab,

    You could substitute any good 240 VAC double pole thermostat for it, but you would lose tight control of the slab temperature.
