Ok, I'm a recently widowed woman and my husband has our furnace delay off set at 8mins!  I want to change to 3 or 4. I've read the manual, but it's just not clear. Of course I had a few of his guy friends here & each of them had different ideas. Pkz HELLLLP!!!!

@tmarie , sorry for your loss. But this is not a DIY job- there may have been a reason someone set the motor-off delay that long. If you tell us where you're located, we might know someone who can help you.

Thanks for replying, even though I understand your reply I can 100% assure you that no professional set it at 8mins. My Jonathan did it without really knowing wth he was doing. Had a service tech here in the fall, but the older of the pair didn't want to touch anything because he would of had to get dirty. The other tech was aready at my ctrl box & he's the one that noticed the settings. He was going to change it, but older guy said, "No, no, no. Don't touch anything. Incase you break it then we're liable." I mean, really?  If he wants to use that logic, then he shouldn't be touching anyones furnace, incase it breaks!  Unbelievable!  Regardless, I'm in Ogdensburg NY

OK, here is a listing of contractors we know in NY:

There are actually some that are not in the NYC area. I'm not that familiar with where things are in NYS, but it's worth a shot. And, if you call someone and they're too far away, they might know someone closer.

What you need is an experienced oil tech. Who currently performs the annual maintenance?
The tech will run and check the system, do a combustion test, smoke test, draft test, and set the required post purge time.

    Hello @tmarie,

Looking at the manual found here
    https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.supplyhouse.com/product_files/R7284-INSTALL.pdf
It looks fairly straight forward to change. Looks like the default is 2:00.

What does the manual say. Start there.

I would echo @Steamhead 's advice and allow a competent professional to evaluate your entire system to make sure you don't need an extended post purge.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Thanks for replying. I appreciate it. I decided to just let a tech deal with it & told the giys thanks, but I got it covered. I've got too many chiefs trying to tell me what it should be. I told them all I have the manual for the furnace, but oh no no don't need it!!  They all know what they're tlkn about. Yeah, I guess so!  That's why there's such a huge difference in every single one of their idea of correct settings!!!  Oh my Lord above,
Wth!? If ya don't know then just tell me.
    So again, THANKS FOR RESPONDING!!

I had a customer back in the days before electronic primary controls for residential use. This guy actually had a stack relay. 40+ year old boiler that worked fine for years. then someone build a 4 story condo right next to his chimney that was only 3 stories tall. The burner coupling and electrode wires were melting when the wind came from the north east. The pressure would build up against the building and push the air right down the chimney. as the air passed by the hot chamber bricks and backed out thru the oil burner, the plastic parts would melt. If I had the option to have an 8 minute post purge, that may have resolved the issue back then. as it was I installed a draft inducer that ran when ever the burner started and the inducer would run for 10 minutes after the burner stopped.

@tmarie has indicated that she believes that there is no reason for the 8 minute post purge. I would want to look at the system before I agree with her. She may be correct, or maybe not. A seasoned professional will know or someone could turn of the post purge and see what happens. If plastic burner parts start meting, then we will know the answer.
