Question about humidifier

Are the type of whole house humidifier pictured any good? I've never owned one before this house and my wife complained that it was too dry so I hooked this up but 1) it doesn't seem to make the air more humid (subjective assessment) and 2) it leaks water into the ductwork and out the overflow pipe at a prodigious rate when it runs. I wired it so that it only runs when the fan is on and I've observed the nozzle when it's running and it both sprays and dribbles. Is it supposed to do that?
Should I even bother trying to get this to work? It seems like this setup is a good way to rust out my ducts.

PS - The two ducted heat pumps have these apparently installed from when the house was built and both were plumbed into the water supply, but neither was hooked up electrically. Maybe I should have left them that way?0

Sounds line the water spray is clogged.
Order new foam pads and water nozzle's.
If the water heater is close by then hot water is better.0
