Lochinvar Fan Speed Troubleshooting

So far when I’ve seen a fan speed error on any lochinvar it’s always been the fan. Venting is always usually good (proper install and has bird screens) wire harnesses are always plugged in. No loose connections. Fuse is always good (come to think of it I’ve yet to see a blown fuse be an issue yet). So what id like to know is how to properly check voltage to diagnose it. They are usually dead on arrival with that error, but today I had one that worked but gave me the error. I know one of the last things is the control board, so I’d like to be able to rule that out. I know one day I’m gonna slap a fan in there and be wrong so I’d like to avoid that. It looks like lochinvar makes a tester. Do you really need this thing or are there some things you can look for with your meter? Thanks!!
