Framing walls around radiator pipe

I'm renovating an old building in Brooklyn with steam radiators. The plaster and lathe walls are being replaced with 2x4 stud framing and sheetrock. The radiator pipe sits proud of 2x4 baseplate flush on the exterior wall. My solution to this is to pull the baseplate forward so it sits just proud of the steam pipe. I'll cut a notch in the baseplate to accommodate for the steam pipe.
Is this a generally accepted approach or is there a better way?

You could go 2 X 6 walls. Get added insulation and hide it.0
