King valve & return valve on residential boiler

In the Near-Boiler Piping in Steam Heating Systems video Dan Holohan recommends having a king valve and return valve so you can isolate the boiler from the system Then turn it on and build up pressure and open the mud valve to clean out the system. Is this something I should do for my residential boiler? Or is this something you typically just do with commercial boilers? I have Peerless Model 63-04.

    Hello @Scott216,

    I am not convinced that is the only way, and those large valves can be expensive. The wet return needs to be kept clear too.

    @ethicalpaul, may have an opinion.

    The valves are nice, but most don't put them on a residential boiler. You will find anything in 3" very $$$$

    I could use two 2" valves on the two risers, and one 1-1/4" valve on the wet return. I already have a 1-1/4" valve laying around. 2" brass ball valves are about $55 each.

    Make sure the valves on the steam pipes are rated for steam.
