Historic Renovation

We have been working on this one, off and on, for the last three years. It is Willow Oaks, the Averell Harriman Estate in Middleburg, VA. If you paid attention in history class you know who he is. I had to look him up.
The current owner meticulously restored this 1930’s stone manor house. The slate roof was removed and the tiles were re-used on the new roof. The stone for the additions were sourced from the same rock quarry as the original stone. The new windows and hardware exactly matched the original.

A complete new mechanical system was part of the restoration. The heating system consists of approximately 11,000 sq. Ft. Of radiant in the basement slab and Warmboard R on the upper zones. Two geo water to water units power the system with boiler back up.A heat exchanger pre-heats DHW using waste heat from the geo units. DHW us provided by two solar panels hidden in the back roof with boiler back up.There is snowmelt I. The front steps, walkway and garage apron.Brian and his crew did the geo. Radiant and boiler.5

Ron and his crew did the AC and ductwork. Four 5-ton LG inverter geo units tied to 12 air handlers.3

The owner did not want a large return grille on the wall of the great room. Ron, the owner, the architect and the GC coordinated this solution. Rather than a large grille, a 2-1/2” x 14’ slot return was hidden into the millwork making it almost invisible.1

needed a good draftsman on that job. not a job you can do on the back of an envelope.
FIRST CLASS ALL THE WAY!
I remember Avrill Harriman vaguely. He was an ambassador to,,,,somewhere, But as I recall that was at the end of his career, he was more famous for something earlier..........have to look that up can't remember1 -

His last wife was Pamala -- She married Randolph Churchill and then Leland Hayward (producer) before Harriman. She had an "thing" with Harriman during the war -- they must have remembered !! Harriman and her had a place next to my grandparents in Westchester .... it was Lelands -- they kept it after he died. Had to be 40 acres.
She died swimming in the Ritz pool one morning .... The real one in Paris as the US ambassador to France.
She had some life

Nice job Dan.
I worked on the steam boiler in Mr. Harriman’s house in Georgetown about 45 years ago. The old gentleman was quite a charming character.Bob Boan
