It is sweltering right now and in past homes we’ve been able to turn the furnace fan on with the thermostat. This new to us home has an old style thermostat and I can not figure out where or how to manual run the fan to circulate the air in our home. I’m assuming somewhere there is a “summer switch “ inside the furnace. Can someone provide some insight on this.

Eh, an old furnace? Look at https://scoophvac.com/furnace-fan-limit-switch/, see if you can't find one of those in your furnace.1

If you cannot do it as @ratio mentioned you would have to add a fan relay and have at least 3 wires from thermostat to furnace.
I am assuming you have no AC installed now1
