Can kitchen oven be under gas pipe in ceiling?

Remodeling the basement and the only good place in kitchen area for stove is directly under black steel gas pipe in the ceiling. There will be a vented range hood over stove and under pipe. Is this against code? A bad idea??

I don’t believe so, that pipe is designed to withstand more heat than what you might encounter in a normal operating kitchen.   I can’t be sure though. There is a contributor that has considerable gas code knowledge, but I can’t think of his screen name.  Perhaps someone else may help to tag him to respond

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

There are some mechanical codes that allow for certain distances from an ignition source. In your case, as you describe it, you are fine with having gas piping installed in an enclosed ceiling. Solid Schedule black iron should be your best choice.
