Perhaps small-district geothermal is increasing its district size, this time with Cornell going 20 times deeper:

Cornell's campus is high on a hill, "far above Cayuga's waters".

I like that it is a trial.  The campus steam heating system is extensive and was really well maintained, I was there from 1980-1981 and don't remember a single complaint about the steam heat.  It was everywhere but none really noticed it which is a good thing

I wonder how many horse power would be needed to operate the pumps to supply all the water at 55 degrees to save maybe 10 degrees on make up water in the winter for heating, Also how much energy would be saved when Ice production and ice storage can be used to cool buildings. Ice production can be done at night when a/c is not needed in most of the building.

I have seen a factory in Hopaque Long Island 35 years ago install an ice making and ice storage for A/C production. The system removed 2 million BTUs of heat from the building. The savings on the electric bill was 15%. The pay back for that installation was short as electric rates increased twice in a 5 year period.

Pay back occurred in 6 years even with maintenance ad repair.

    P.S.

Geothermal may have some long term consequences like returning water at to high a temperature where the condition of the aquafier will be affected.
